What is GENORYN?
GENORYN (ticker GNR) is an independent, open-source proof-of-work monetary network written in Rust. Every transfer is a shielded note protected by Halo 2 zero-knowledge proofs, the supply is capped at 21,000,000 GNR by integer consensus rules, and blocks are mined with CPU-friendly RandomX.
Who created GENORYN?
The creator is unknown. The project is published under the MIT or Apache-2.0 license and is meant to be verified, not trusted: every node checks every block, proof, signature and nullifier itself.
Is GENORYN live?
Yes. GENORYN Mainnet 1.0 (chain ID genoryn-mainnet-1.0) is a new network launched with release 1.0.0, from block 0, with no premine. The earlier network genoryn-mainnet-v1 (releases 0.4–0.6) is retired: its coins do not carry over, and reusing its recovery phrase does not bring a balance with it. The software has not been independently audited yet: mine or hold only what you can afford to lose.
Was there a premine or founder allocation?
No. Every coin is mined, and there is no founder-only minting privilege. Blocks 1–500 pay an early subsidy of 1,000 GNR each (500,000 GNR, about 2.38% of the cap) to whoever mines them. At launch the only known miner is run by the project operator on the project's server, so the operator may receive most or all of those 500,000 GNR and early holdings may be concentrated. The treasury share of 1 GNR per block (heights 501–210,500) is paid on mainnet to a provably unspendable burn address, so at most about 20,789,999.99995 GNR can ever circulate.
What is a gori?
The gori is the smallest unit of GNR. 1 GNR = 1,000,000,000,000 gori (10^12). Consensus and RPC values are exact integers in gori, never floating point.
How do I get a wallet?
On Windows, download GENORYN-Setup-1.0.0.exe (no administrator rights needed). On Linux, download genoryn-1.0.0-mainnet-linux-x86_64.zip. Verify the SHA-256 checksum and open the wallet. Choose Quick mode (no local node) or Full mode (your own node), create a wallet and write the 24-word recovery phrase down offline.
Do my coins from the old network or the devnet carry over?
No. Mainnet 1.0 is a new network with a new genesis. Coins of the retired genoryn-mainnet-v1 (releases 0.4–0.6) and of the devnet do not carry over, and restoring an old recovery phrase on 1.0 does not restore a balance. Releases before 1.0.0 cannot connect to Mainnet 1.0. Mainnet 1.0 data lives in .genoryn/mainnet-1.0.
I lost my password. Can anyone recover my wallet?
No one can. The wallet file is encrypted with Argon2id and XChaCha20-Poly1305. If you have your 24-word recovery phrase, you can restore the wallet with a new password — and it also restores control of your usernames. Without the phrase and the password, funds are unrecoverable by design.
Why can't I look up the balance of an address?
Because GENORYN has no transparent balance database. Outputs are encrypted shielded notes; only the owner's wallet can decrypt them by scanning the chain locally. There is no address-balance API and no rich list.
Can I prove I paid someone?
Yes. The wallet can export a payment proof for a single output you sent or received. It discloses that output's recipient and amount to whoever you give it to, and nothing else — no spending key and no wallet-wide view key.
How do @usernames work?
Usernames live on the blockchain. Register @you once from Receive → Username; every node derives the same name table from the chain, the first valid registration wins and the name never expires. Payments to a name stay fully shielded.
What does a username cost?
3–4 characters cost 1,000 GNR, 5–6 characters 100 GNR, 7 or more 10 GNR. Updating the receiver of an owned name costs 1 GNR. The price is burned to a provably unspendable address — nobody receives it — which makes squatting expensive.
Can I mine with my computer?
Yes. GENORYN uses RandomX, which is designed for ordinary CPUs. Start mining from the wallet's Mining page or with genoryn-miner. You can use one thread per logical CPU, up to 16; each worker needs about 256 MiB in light mode.
Does mining start automatically?
Never. Mining only starts when you choose it, and it pays to a receiving address only. A miner needs no wallet file or recovery phrase, so it can run on a server that holds no keys.
What is the block reward?
Blocks 1–500 pay an early subsidy of exactly 1,000 GNR each to the miner (the whole subsidy; no normal reward or treasury on top, fees extra). From block 501 the miner receives the normal reward of 4.825437595129 GNR plus all fees, halving every 2,102,400 blocks (about four years); a further 1 GNR per block for heights 501–210,500 goes to the treasury, which is burned on mainnet. Mined coins mature after 60 blocks (about an hour).
Windows blocks the installer or the miner. Why?
GENORYN builds are unsigned. If Windows 11 Smart App Control is enforcing, the installer stops before installing, explains why and offers to open its settings; the wallet also names Smart App Control or application-control policies (events 4551, 1260) when they block the node or miner. Verify the SHA-256 before allowing anything.
My miner stopped. What now?
The Mining page explains why in plain words (refused admin token, node not answering, wrong network, RandomX failed to start) and, when a fix exists, restarts in portable RandomX mode or with fewer threads — at most three times. Mining never needs administrator rights.
Does GENORYN use Tor?
Yes. A Tor client (Arti) is built into the node and the wallet. New installations start in Tor-only mode: every peer connection, peer lookup and payment broadcast goes through Tor and nothing falls back to a direct connection. Switch in Network → Network privacy. Hybrid mode mixes clearnet and onion peers.
My Tor-only wallet stays at height 0. Why?
Tor-only nodes need bootstrap peers reachable through Tor. They read onion seeds from seeds/mainnet-1.0-onion.txt at startup; onion seed addresses for Mainnet 1.0 are published there at launch. The first start also downloads about 10 MB of Tor directory data. If it still cannot connect, add an onion peer you know or choose Hybrid on the Network page.
What is GENORYN Lite?
A second edition without the miner program and without the Mining page. Wallet, Quick and Full mode, usernames and payment proofs are identical. Both editions share the wallets in .genoryn/mainnet-1.0 and can be installed side by side.
Can I use a wallet without running a node?
Yes, with Quick mode. The wallet reads the chain from remote nodes over Tor and still validates every block on your computer; keys, signing and your balance stay local, and the verified chain is cached so later syncs download only new blocks. Full mode runs your own node instead. Switching between the modes keeps your keys, scan progress, pending payments and mining history.
Is GENORYN anonymous?
Cryptography hides amounts and receiving identities from chain observers, and Tor modes hide your IP address from peers. Neither protects against malware, copied seeds, weak passwords, an adversary watching both ends of a Tor circuit, timing analysis or a small anonymity set. GENORYN does not claim absolute anonymity.
What does the explorer show if everything is private?
Public data only: block headers, difficulty, timestamps, issuance, public fees, transaction IDs, the number of actions, nullifiers (which prove a note was spent without revealing which), note commitments, anchors and on-chain username records. Never amounts, senders or recipients.
How do nodes find each other?
Through explicit peers, a persistent peer cache, peer exchange, operator DNS seeds and the published seeds/mainnet-1.0.txt list in the repository. Seeds only introduce peers; they are never trusted for consensus. Mainnet 1.0 uses TCP port 29710.
How fast are transactions confirmed?
Blocks target 60 seconds. A transaction is pending in the mempool until a block includes it. Proof of work gives probabilistic finality: each further block makes a reversal exponentially harder.
